After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our planned 2027 expedition to the Gulf of California.
This was not a decision we made lightly. We determined that postponing the expedition is the best way to strengthen the Foundation for the future and ensure that when we return to the Gulf, we are positioned to do so successfully and sustainably. Financial considerations were an important factor, along with the staff capacity, planning, and resources required to carry out an international expedition of this scope.
We are deeply grateful to the scientists and partners in Mexico who devoted their time and expertise to developing research proposals and preparing for the expedition. We remain committed to these collaborations and look forward to returning to the Gulf of California when the timing and resources are right.
In the meantime, the Western Flyer Foundation remains active and focused on its mission. We will continue providing hands-on educational experiences for students, expanding partnerships, and welcoming our community aboard the Western Flyer through educational and public programs.
We are grateful for the continued encouragement and support of our donors, partners, volunteers, and friends. Together, we are strengthening the Foundation for the long term, preserving the Western Flyer remarkable legacy, and ensuring that it continues to inspire curiosity, advance science, and connect people to the ocean for generations to come.
If you have questions about the expedition or would like to learn more about the Foundation’s work, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
