Applications Open for the Western Flyer’s MentorShip Program – July 13-17

Spend a week exploring Monterey Bay through science, art, and discovery.

The Western Flyer Foundation is now accepting applications for its MentorShip Program—a free, unique, week-long summer experience that brings together high school students and college mentors to explore the marine environment alongside scientists, artists, and educators.

The program runs July 13-17 in Moss Landing, with daily activities from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Participants will work in a small, close-knit cohort as they experience firsthand what careers at the intersection of science, education, and the arts can look like.

A Week of Hands-On Discovery

Throughout the week, participants will:

  • Spend a day aboard the historic Western Flyer
  • Collect and examine plankton
  • Learn scientific illustration and nature journaling
  • Tour the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and other local research facilities
  • Meet scientists, artists, and educators working in marine conservation and research
  • Build lasting connections with peers who share an interest in the ocean

Guest presenters include professional science illustrators, NOAA plankton scientists, marine biologists, paleobiologists, seaweed researchers, and other professionals from the Monterey Bay region.

For High School Students

If you’re curious about the ocean, enjoy science or art (or both!), and want to spend a week learning alongside professionals and college mentors, this program is for you.

Participation is completely free and includes a nature journal and watercolor kit. If transportation, dietary accommodations, or other support would help you participate, please contact us.

For College Students

College students studying marine science or related fields are invited to serve as paid near-peer mentors for the week.

As a mentor, you’ll guide high school students while strengthening your own leadership, communication, and mentoring skills. You’ll participate in all program activities and work alongside professionals throughout the week.

Mentors receive a $125 stipend per day (plus a nature journal and watercolor kit) and will attend one brief virtual meeting before the program begins.
