Visit the Western Flyer

Public tours of the Western Flyer in Coos Bay, Oregon, June, 2026.

The Western Flyer is more than a historic vessel. She is a living, working oceanographic research vessel that continues to inspire discovery through science, education, and exploration.

We love welcoming visitors aboard whenever possible. Because the Western Flyer is an active working boat, public boarding is offered during scheduled open houses, community events, and other special programs rather than through regular daily tours.

How to Experience the Western Flyer

The best opportunities to step aboard the Western Flyer are during:

  • Public open houses
  • Community events and festivals
  • Occasional private tours

These opportunities are announced throughout the year as the vessel’s schedule allows.

View our upcoming events to see when the Western Flyer will next be open to the public.

Even when the Western Flyer is not open for tours, you’re welcome to stop by and see the vessel from the shore when she’s in port. You can track the vessel’s location at this link.

Where is the Western Flyer?

The Western Flyer is based in Moss Landing and Monterey, California, for approximately 8–10 months each year. During the spring, the vessel typically spends 2–3 months traveling along the West Coast and to Mexico’s Gulf of California for scientific expeditions, educational programs, and community outreach.

You can also track the vessel’s location in real time.
