Monterey, CA – The Western Flyer Foundation and Soulcraft Allstars are proud to announce that their short film The Western Flyer with Nick Offerman has been named a finalist in the Sustainability, Environment, & Climate category of the 4th Annual Anthem Awards. This nine-minute film, a playful yet heartfelt tribute to the legendary Western Flyer, was chosen from over 2,300 entries submitted from 34 countries.

Narrated by Emmy-award-winning actor and comedian Nick Offerman, the film captures the storied past of the historic Western Flyer—a sardine boat made famous by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts’ 1940 expedition to the Sea of Cortez. Offerman’s signature wit brings this rich history to life, intertwining humor, ocean science, and environmental advocacy. From its fabled adventures to its recent restoration, the Western Flyer’s journey is one of curiosity, adventure, and resilience.

“We are so honored to be recognized by the Anthem Awards,” said Sherry Flumerfelt, Executive Director of the Western Flyer Foundation. “This film celebrates not just the restoration of a boat, but the hope it inspires for future ocean stewards. Nick Offerman’s humor made the message fun and accessible. The Anthem Awards recognition affirms that this quirky tale of history, science, and adventure is resonating with people in a powerful way.”

Director Aaron Straight of Soulcraft Allstars added, “To be named a finalist in the Sustainability category is an incredible honor. The Western Flyer’s story is about seeing the world through new eyes—about using art, science, and even humor to explore our relationship with the ocean. Nick Offerman’s voice and spirit brought that playful energy we needed to tell a story that’s both inspiring and entertaining. Being honored for this work means the world to us.”

The film follows the Western Flyer’s transformation from a vessel nearly lost to history to a beacon of marine research and education, now serving as a platform for young scientists, artists, and conservationists. The restored boat, complete with a state-of-the-art science lab, sails on to inspire future generations to explore and care for the ocean.

Fans of the film are invited to vote for it in the Community Voice Category by October 31st. Show your support by casting your vote here.

The Anthem Awards celebrate purpose-driven work that fosters positive social and environmental change. Winners will be announced on November 19, 2024, with finalists competing for Gold, Silver, or Bronze Anthem Awards.
