Free weekend series returns to Moss Landing August 1 through September 6

MOSS LANDING, Calif. — The Western Flyer Foundation is excited to announce the return of Seas the Summer, a free community event series taking place on Saturdays and Sundays from August 1 through September 6 in Moss Landing.

The series will feature hands-on art and science activities, weekly seminars, free docked tours of the Western Flyer and Sunflower Star Laboratory, and local vendors and organizations that make Monterey Bay special.

Following a successful inaugural season last year, Seas the Summer is back with even more opportunities for the community to explore Moss Landing and engage with marine science, art, history, and storytelling. The series is presented in collaboration with the Western Flyer Foundation, Sunflower Star Laboratory, Monterey Bay Eco Tours, Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust, The Ship’s Store, and Woodward Marine Market.

“The Western Flyer’s historic journey with John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts brought together science, art, and storytelling,” said Kaitlyn Ponce, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Western Flyer Foundation. “Seas the Summer gives us an opportunity to continue that tradition while celebrating and connecting with the wonderful community we have here in Moss Landing.”

The series begins Saturday, August 1, with activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and continues every Saturday and Sunday through September 6.

Each Saturday will feature a different free hands-on activity, from exploring plankton and building boats to creating seaweed bookmarks, gyotaku fish prints, and cyanotypes.

New this year is a free Saturday seminar series aboard the docked Western Flyer, featuring local experts sharing stories about science, history, and art. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors may sign up in person at the Western Flyer Foundation outreach booth during the Saturday event.

On Saturdays, the public will also have the opportunity to tour Sunflower Star Laboratory. More information is available at sunflowerstarlab.org

Sundays will feature free docked tours of the historic Western Flyer, along with tours of Sunflower Star Laboratory, community outreach booths, and local art vendors. Advance registration is not required. Western Flyer tours will be offered throughout the event, with the final tour beginning at 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday, August 30, the series will feature a special celebration with the Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, in collaboration with Woodward Marine Market. Guests 18 and older will have the opportunity to enjoy a free uni tasting while learning more about the region’s marine ecosystems, sustainable fisheries, and local research.

Seas the Summer will take place along the Moss Landing waterfront in front of Woodward Marine Market, located at 10932 Clam Way, Moss Landing, CA 95039
