The Western Flyer Foundation invites scientists and graduate students, particularly those based in Mexico, to propose research projects for our 2027 Gulf of California expedition. The historic Western Flyer, made famous by Steinbeck and Ricketts, now serves as a platform for collaborative, community-based marine science.
Selected projects will receive ship time, crew support, meals aboard, access to onboard scientific equipment, and a $5,000 USD stipend. Proposals should address meaningful scientific questions with tangible benefit to the region’s communities and ecosystems.
NEW! Deadline extension: Due to a technical issue that prevented us from receiving some emailed questions, we are extending the proposal deadline to January 30, 2026, to ensure all interested applicants have a fair opportunity to apply.
